Unlike most shower faucet manufacturers, Kohler has and continues to keep its shower lineup pretty simple. Whereas other companies are expanding or overhauling their shower valve offerings, Kohler has chosen to stay the course with their tried and true shower valves, only making slight improvements and offerings minor upgrades.
Kohler’s shower valve consist of one standard pressure balance valve that is compatible with most if not all of its faucet collection and a separate thermostatic valve that works with their premium and high end collections.
Kohler has so far refused to add all in one multifunction shower valves that have become quite common among its competitors, namely American Standard, Delta & Grohe, etc..
This is not to say that Kohler doesn’t have any non standard valves. They have the stacked thermostatic valve and their push button pressure balance valve. However, those are secondary options, and limited in compatibility with their faucet collections.
Below is a list of all the Kohler shower valves, their use cases, and the collections they are compatible with.
Kohler 8304-K-NA: the standard pressure balance valve
The 8304-K-NA is Kohler’s standard pressure balance valve. It is by far their most popular shower valve as it is compatible with all the Kohler faucet collections. Unlike other brands, Kohler keeps it simple with only one unique pressure balance valve. There are many variations of the same product but they all stem form the same 8300 Series of Kohler shower valves.
The Kohler 8304 is the successor of the equally popular 304-K-NA. Both valves are compatible with the same trims old and new. The main differentiator is that the 8304 is more of a modular setup as the valve can be sold separately from the cartridge.
As such, there are more variations of the same product, and they all fall under the umbrella of the Kohler 8300 series of valves. Here is a list of the valves that fall under the same category
Model Numbers | Description |
---|---|
8300-K-NA | 8300 valve body only with no cartridge and no service stops. Standard connections |
8300-KS-NA | 8300 valve body with built in service stops but no cartridge. Standard connections |
8300-KSL-NA | 8300 valve body with loose service stops but no cartridge. Standard connections |
8304-K-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) with no service stops. Standard connections |
8304-KS-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) built in service stops. Standard connections |
8304-KSL-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) with loose service stops. Standard connections. |
8304-PX-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) with no service stops. PEX crimp connections |
8304-PS-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) with service stops. PEX crimp connections |
8304-US-NA | Pressure balance valve (cartridge included) with service stops. PEX Expansion connections |
8305-NA | Pressure Balance cartridge only. no valve body |
28304-K-NA | 8300 valve body with thermostatic cartridge and no service stops. Standard connections |
28304-KS-NA | 8300 valve body with thermostatic cartridge and built in service stops. Standard connections |
28304-KSL-NA | 8300 valve body with thermostatic cartridge and loose service stops. Standard connections |
28305-NA | Thermostatic cartridge only. no valve body |
The thermostatic variation in particular is a unique product as the 8304 is mainly a pressure balance valve. The 28304-K-NA behaves like a pressure balance valve meaning the handle behaves as a volume control and instantly turns the water on at full flow but it has the added benefit of the user being able to pinpoint the exact temperature without worrying about moving the dial based on outside factors like extreme weather. The set temperature will stay the same at all time barring the typical 1-2 degrees fluctuations.
Kohler 11748-K-NA: Pressure Balance valve with push button diverter
The 11748-K-NA is a standard pressure balance valve with a push button diverter. It’s especially made for use with tub and shower setups. While you can use the 8304 valve with a tub and shower system, it requires the tub spout to be equipped with a pull up diverter.
This works fine for most people. However, it’s not the most elegant looking setup and the operation can be quite clunky. The push button diverter allows the tub spout to have a much sleeker look which is ideal for contemporary shower setups.
Unlike the 8304, the number of variation for this valve is very limited. There is only the 11748-K-NA and the 11748-KS-NA. The former is the default standard valve , while the latter is the same valve but with service stops built in.
The available trims are also limited for the 11748-K-NA. Not all collections offer matching trims. There is no rhyme or reason as to when Kohler decides to include a push button diverter trim for any given collection. It’s really hit or miss.
While the 8300 series has a total of 26 collections with a matching trim, by our account, the 11748 only has a total of 11 matching trims. Here is the complete list of matching trim by the time of this writing.

The trim model number are all prefixes. They are typically followed by a -4 indicating a lever handle, or a -3 indicating a cross handle. They will also have a suffix indicating their finishes. For example -CP for Chrome Plated or -BN Brushed nickel.
If you’re looking for a brushed nickel cross handle version of the Components trim, you would look for this model number: T78016-3-BN.
Kohler 2972-KS-NA: Kohler’s Thermostatic Valve
The Kohler 2972-KS-NA is Kohler’s standalone thermostatic valve. It’s used in virtually all premium and showroom collections. Kohler does not offer thermostatic options on some of the entry level collections.
The Kohler 2972 is the most common version as it comes with 1/2′ connection and therefore can handle up to three outlets at full flow. However, if you’re planning on adding more outlets or multiple body sprays, it’s best to have your installer look into upgrading the piping to 3/4″ and opt for the 3/4″ version instead: The Kohler 2975-KS-NA
Both the 2972 and 2975 valves come with service stops built in and they are both equipped with female threaded inlet and outlets. Unlike the 8304 pressure balance, there are no variations with the same product with different connections, you would need to use male threaded adapter to connect to sweat copper, or PEX connections.
As mentioned before, Kohler’s standalone thermostatic valve is available in their mid level to high end collections. Below is a complete list
Collection | Model Number | Handle Options |
---|---|---|
Artifacts | T72769 | Lever handle, Cross handle |
Avid | T97022 | Lever handle only |
Bancroft | T10593 | Lever handle Only |
Components | T78027 | Wheel, Dial, Lever Handle |

Like on the pressure balance trims, the trim model number are all prefixes. They are followed by a -4 indicating a lever handle, or a -3 indicating a cross handle. They will also have a suffix indicating their finishes. For example -CP for Chrome Plated or -BN Brushed nickel. The dial handle has a -8 prefix and the wheel has a -9 prefix.
So the complete model would be the model number followed by a – and the handle style and another dash followed by the finish.
For example a brushed brass (-2MB) version Components thermostatic trim handle would be T78027-9-2MB.
Kohler 2973-KS-NA: Kohler’s Thermostatic Stacked Valve
As we mentioned previously, Kohler hasn’t jumped on the stacked valve bandwagon that a lot of manufacturers offer these days. These stacked valves typically offer a thermostatic valve with the ability to add one or multiple volume controls and diverters on the same valve trim. Kohler has stayed away from that.
However, Kohler has had a stacked valve for years, before these new stacked valves got popular. The main difference is that the Kohler stacked valve only offers one volume control.
The 2973-KS-NA is Kohler’s thermostatic stacked valve which comes with one thermostatic handle and a volume control. The Thermostatic handle sits below the volume control that sits on top.
Both the Kohler 2973 and 2976 valves are limited in options as they only serve three collections at the moment.
- Bancroft: T10594-4
- Memoirs: T10422-4V
- Purist: T10594-4
They seem to be an afterthought for Kohler as these collections are old tried and true collections but none of the newer collection has been equipped with a stacked valve trim.
Who knows? This gives us hope that Kohler is working on a revamped stacked valve to compete with other manufacturers.
Kohler Volume Controls: 2974-K-NA
Kohler’s lineup of volume controls is pretty straight forward. There is the Kohler 2974-K-NA for 1/2″ connections, and the 2977-K-NA for 3/4″ connections. They are both designed to work with the Kohler Single handle thermostatic valves the 2972-KS-NA and 2975-KS-NA respectively.
Since the Kohler volume controls are designed to work in conjunction with the standard thermostatic valve, the list of compatible volume control trims will be the same as the thermostatic valves. We have added the compatible model numbers for the shower trims.
Collection | Model Number | Handle Options |
---|---|---|
Artifacts | T72771 | Lever handle, Cross handle |
Avid | T97025 | Lever handle only |

Kohler keeps it consistent with their model numbers, as the models numbers for the volume controls are configured similarly to the pressure balance and thermostatic shower trims. Simply add a handle type to the trim and the finish code to get the complete model number.
For Example, a chrome Composed cross handle volume trim would read T73135-3-CP, with -3 being the code for cross handle and -CP being the code for chrome plated.
Kohler 728-K-NA: Kohler’s go to Standalone diverter valve
Kohler’s 728-K-NA valve is one of the most popular diverter valve on the market. Unlike most manufacturers, there are not too many alternatives for the Kohler diverter valve. Whereas most manufacturers, have shower trims with built in diverters, Kohler has no such thing. Their Push button diverter is only compatible with tub and shower setups but not with separate handheld showers.
The Kohler 728-K-NA serves as both a two way and three way diverter. It also allows you to share any two functions simultaneously. It can be used with the Kohler 8300 series of pressure balance valves including the popular 8304-K-NA, as well as any Kohler thermostatic + volume control combination.
However, if your local jurisdiction does not allow for shared functions, you should instead opt for the Kohler 737-K-NA, as it has all the benefits of the Kohler 728 without the sharing functionality.

Digital Thermostatic Valves: DTV and Anthem
Most of the times when we talk about valves, we are referring to mechanical valves. However, we can’t ignore the fact that digital valves are slowly making their way into our shower stalls and Kohler is one of the pioneers in that field, as they’ve consistently have had digital valves in their lineup as others have been reluctant to commit to this type of valve.
Kohler carries two types of digital valves: the DTV valve that has been around for over a decade and the Anthem that has recently been introduced in 2022.
Below is the list of all the digital valves and options offered
Collection | Valve Model Number | Description |
---|---|---|
Anthem | 28209-NA | 2 port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
Anthem | 28210-NA | 3 port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
Anthem | 28211-NA | 4 Port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
Anthem | 28212-NA | 6 Port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
DTV+ | 682-K-NA | 6 Port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
DTV+ | 557-K1-NA | 3 port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
DTV+ | 528-K1-NA | 2 port Digital Thermostatic Valve |
Each Digital Valve must be purchased with a compatible user facing digital interface that allows the user to select exactly which outlet they want turned on and at what temperature.
Thank you for compiling this! The customer service chat at kohler , two of them…, never heard of the k-304 lol… all i wanted to do was upgrade ie buy more kohler. They were clueless
Glad we can help. We find that customer service is not as helpful as tech support. If you’re ever having a tough time with customer service, ask for Tech Support at Kohler, they are uaually well versed with older parts as they get calls from plumbers and contractors. I think most plumbers still call the new version the 304-k, although it hasn’t been around for 5 years.
